This is a Scary Self-Portrait

I've always been fascinated with the idea of a tortured artist. I have never been one until this project. I like to use art as a way to escape my problems and trials, a way to forget the world that I live in. For this project, we had to do a cubism piece. I decided to do a self portrait inspired by Picasso's later cubism works and by African tribal masks. I channeled all of my hate, sadness, loneliness, and creepiness into this piece, and this is what I came up with:

My class did not respond well to this piece. But what do you expect from a bunch of Mormon's who try their best to make the best of any situation? There were several comments about how dark it is and how creepy the red eye is. All my teacher had to say about it was that it had fantastic technical skill. I guess that is a good thing, but I was expecting so much more out of everyone. Through this piece, I realized a lot about myself. It turns out that I really like making people feel uncomfortable with my art. I enjoyed seeing my classmates squirm when they looked at this piece, and I liked it when my teacher stammered until all he could say was that I used great technical skill. Maybe that is why artist do the things that they do, not because they are tortured artists, but because they enjoy torturing the viewer.

P.S. This is made with charcoal and chalk pastel on Stonehenge paper.

This is a Guitar

These are six views of my guitar. It's pretty boring, actually. But I got a 100% on this project, so I guess its all good.

This is a Tronie

Hello all you lovely people of the internet (name that YouTube video series). For one of my drawing projects, we had to reinvent the classic Tronie. What is a Tronie you ask? It is an old school renaissance portrait.

Here is an example of what is arguably the most famous Tronie, Vermeer's "Girl with a Pearl Earring"
Notice the three-quarter view profile and contrast between the figure and the background.

Now here is my contemporary take on the classic Tronie:

And for your enjoyment, I included the selfies I took as reference for this picture:

These are Drawing Projects

Hello to the people out there who read this blog (which is probably closer to one than two). I've been in a drawing class this semester, and I haven't posted any of my works because I didn't want to post them until they were finished. What I have learned this semester is that they will never be finished. Art works are always a work in progress, and they always have something that could be added or improved. I'm satisfied with some of my works this semester, and although none of them are perfect, they come pretty dang close.

This is a blind contour collage. I drew all of the elements in this collage without looking at my paper as I was drawing, then collaged them together. I like the composition of this piece, but the "cloud of ideas" part of the drawing was lost when I took the picture because the drawings aren't bold. If I was to continue working on this piece, I would make the elements other than the girl at the bottom more bold
This is a still life. It is a line drawing, so no value here. I had to use lines to show the contours of the objects as well as the shadows.
This is a drawn collage. I cut out all the images from magazines, collaged them, and then drew the collage in gray scale. This is my favorite piece so far.
This is an isometric design. I drew a grid that was based on 30 degree triangles, and then drew these shapes on the grid. The result is that all these shapes seem to be in a three-dimensional space. I used bold colors to make it fun and kind of trippy looking.

More projects to come, I can guarantee it.

This is Concept Art

Hi!

A film student is making a short film and needed some concept art, so I decided to design some costumes. The film is set in the 1930's in a town that centers around boxing. These are just some 30's inspired costumes that I came up with. I used my digital paint tablet to make these.

This is an Etsy Shop

My art projects this summer have mostly been my Esty shop. I've got a bunch of copies of my watercolor paintings that I'm selling, as well as a few onesies for babies. Check it out!

This is Digital Paint

I finally got myself a digital paint tablet. It is a Wacom Bamboo Create tablet, and it is awesome. I've just been messing around with it, and trying to figure out how it works. In the process, I created this:

The Letter

Hello to the few people who look at my blog. I have not posted anything new recently because I was focusing on bringing all my animation stuff together for my application to the program. I received the letter last week and I was not accepted into the animation program at BYU. I've thought about it, and I'm okay with it. I really feel like I tried my best on my application, and my best is all I can do. If that isn't good enough, it wasn't meant to be. So I'm changing my major to illustration. Maybe with that I can be a concept artist for Disney. I might also minor in film because I loved my film class this past semester. I'm not giving up on my dreams, just taking them in a new direction.

This is a Pokemon: Final for Figure Drawing

So for my Figure Drawing final I had to draw myself as a Pokemon trainer and as a Pokemon. My Pokemon is Slomeleon. It hangs from trees like a sloth, changes colors like a chameleon, and sits on its opponent. Its not a Pokemon that anyone would actually want, but its pretty cute. I accidentally deleted the picture with them in battle, so all I have are the concepts.

These Are More Sketchbook Assignments

These are some sketchbook assignments. One was to draw a Star Trek character, and another was to create Victorian/Japanese fashion. For the Star Trek one, I did a Klingon, but in the style of Stephen Silver, who created Kim Possible, and for the fashion design, I did a Victorian style kimono.

These Are Even More Figure Drawings

Here are a ton of figure drawings. Back by popular demand is the infamous ruffle dress. Gotta love those

These next ones are some exaggerations. For the first one I added claws, the second one I lengthened the legs (so much that they didn't all fit on the scanner), and for the third one I pretended it was a water balloon that I was squeezing at the knee.

This is just a picture that I liked.

These are figures that are built from cylinders and cones

And I thought this pose was boring so I turned the figure into a superhero with laser vision.

These are Sketchbook Assignments

These are some assignments for my sketchbook for my figure drawing class. For the first one I had to draw my favorite Marvel comic book character, so I picked the Incredible Hulk. For the next one I had to do Batman. For the last one I had to pick my favorite Star Wars character, so I picked R2D2. I used colored pencils for the hulk and water colored pencils for Batman and R2D2.

These are Exaggerated Poses

In figure drawing, we worked on exaggerating the pose, taking the pose that the model is doing and pushing it even further. We also worked on adding our own props, so for one of these drawings I added rainboots and an umbrella.

These are Clothes

In figure drawing we are drawing the model with costumes on. I like the ones with ruffles

This is a Window

Along with my final projects from my pre-animation classes, several figure drawings, and my sketchbook, I also need to turn in samples of other artistic works, like photos, paintings, and stuff like that, for my animation portfolio application. My mom recently sent me some window markers, and while this picture will not be going in my portfolio, maybe something like it will.

This is a Butterfly (final)

This is my final for my 3D Graphics class. The assignment was to make a bug and put it in an environment, so I made a butterfly...that glows. It's pretty similar to my draft, with a few subtle changes. Can you spot the differences?

This is a Butterfly (rough draft)

This is the rough draft for my butterfly. I was so excited about it that I had to post it before it was completely finished.

This is a Lego Man (final)

I redid my Lego Man. It's Michael Jordan. I just fixed a bunch of little things, one of them being the background. I actually gave it a court floor.
